One Warwick Park

by Emily Healey-Lynham

At a recent stay in the garden of England I spent time at One Warwick Park a new hotel in the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Based in two buildings that interconnect via an art gallery underneath One Warwick Park is a taste of London in the country.

The location is brilliant – right opposite the historic Pantiles and just a short walk to the town centre. The main hotel sits at the southern end of the High Street, with the railway station a five-minute walk away.

I travelled down by car but be aware that parking could be an issue for the location, I have been informed if you park after 4pm you can park outside till the morning or you would need to head toward the Pantiles to park and walk back to the hotel. The Townhouse and School House’s red-brick Victorian exteriors are lovely to look at and traditional to a country hotel feel, but once inside the feel to me was a London boutique hotel with grey colours, modern art and sleek flooring. There are 39 bedrooms in the hotel with four room categories range from Club to Junior Suite.

The check-in staff were friendly, professional, smartly dressed and dapper. Nothing was a problem when asking about the area and we were showed to our room which is a nice personal touch. Our bedroom – a junior suite was located in the Townhouse across from check-in.The room itself was spectacular; beautifully designed with absolutely no expense spared and spotlessly clean. All 39 bedrooms come with impressive standard amenities: complimentary bottled water, teas and a coffee machine, king or superking HYPNOS beds and generous storage – with a closet and drawers. The junior suite had period features mixing into the signature modern design: anthracite silken curtains, opalescent lamp shades, sleek furniture and silver tweed armchairs. Our view was stunning looking into the hotel in our entrance hall of the chandelier that is the show stopper as you head into the restaurant L’AMORE. And looking out onto the street was a postcard view of the beautiful Church of King Charles the Martyr and the cute little shops on the High Street such as a second-hand book shop.

The bathroom was fabulous with monsoon rain showers, standalone baths and Temple Spa toiletries, also the added touch of speakers in the bathroom so you could listen to the television while bathing!Breakfast is a Continental buffet or cooked breakfast in the restaurant or you can be lazy like we were and have it delivered at a time suitable for you. The only trouble was the table was not big enough to hold all of our goodies!

One problem could be the amount of steps as there are several into the hotel and between the buildings but there are two accessible rooms available, reachable by lift.

I would recommend a trip to the bar as it is happy hour from 5-7pm! Nathan the barman can make a fantastic Martini (and several other great cocktails too!) and on Friday’s the bar has live music. The bar area is open to non-residents till late and there is also a more relaxed snug, and several private dining and meeting rooms available. As a guest you can have 24hr service and get between the two buildings via the art gallery where you can see modern pieces as you head back to your room with an Espresso Martini!I enjoyed my stay in this hotel as it felt like a part of the City in Kent. As I waved goodbye after a comfortable night’s sleep driven in a luxury car by the happy Sid (ordered by One Warwick Park for us) I knew I would definitely be back and since staying there I have been back for cocktails!
