The Bonnie Mob

by Lara Protheroe

A knock at the door heralded a courier-delivered box from The Bonnie Mob. This was exciting stuff, and I put my wriggling, bundle of joy into his Italian wooden cot and hastily cut open the box. It is amazing how, once you’ve had a baby, all your priorities change. I mean the really important things in life, like which suede heels go best with that designer leather jacket, turns into an obsession with your child looking fantastic. And, I am all about coordinating. Tall Dark and Handsome Daddy (TDH) has also had some new acquisitions to his wardrobe in order to match with The Little Prince (TLP).

I digress; back to the box and The Bonnie Mob. TLP had been sent some items from their latest collection and they were delicious! A playsuit in soft, grey, knitted, organic cotton decorated with a gorgeous penguin was my favourite item from the collection. The attention to detail is beautiful. The two tiny buttons by the neck of the playsuit are in a sunny, accent yellow, and the grey buttons at the bottom are branded The Bonnie Mob. It’s the little touches that make the pieces so special. The clothing has a handmade feel to it, and there is certainly a vintage flavour to the pieces, with the graphic designs and use of block colour. The denim dungarees are incredibly soft and look stylish yet ready for playtime.

The company started out in 2005 as The Bonnie Baby, and was launched by designer Tracey Samuel. After graduating with an MA from prestigious St Martins, Tracey worked with various international designers, including Sonia Rykiel. Working in Paris from a cute flat in Montparnasse, she flitted between there and Sussex, until she started a family. The lure of the seaside prevailed and The Bonnie Mob is based in glorious Hove.

The Bonnie Mob say that their clothes represent ‘The spirit of freedom and the wildness of childhood’, which is what I hope for in TLP. Although the clothing is beautiful there is a sense that it is practical. It can happily go in the washing machine and is comfortable for the adventurers. “For the den builders, the wildlife hunters, the felt-tip masterpiece makers…”

The collection includes soft coordinating blankets, and TLP’s has already had several compliments as his covers him whilst in his personal, human-powered carriage. There are stylish matching hats with ears, and iron on badges for customising and Bonniemobbing another garment. Every item has a colour coordinated Bonnie Mob apple logo sweetly stitched in.

The company has had huge success and is sold worldwide, stocking independent boutiques and department stores such as Selfridges in London, Barneys in NY, Isetan Tokyo, Sogo Shanghai and Hong Kong. The Autumn/Winter2016 collection,’Journey North’, uses yummy colours, cheerful characters and lovely sky or animal patterns. The range draws inspiration from the Polar North and “wants to take an adventure via the wild forests of Canada and the snowscapes of Alaska, to the icy Arctic circle”. The A/W 2016 collection features bears, penguins, rabbits and foxes, perfect for your little critters and and adventurers. Each night I pop a Night Sky blanket, decorated in a hand drawn pattern featuring a myriad of celestial figures, over Luther and hope he dreams of the stars.

The range of baby grows, t-shirts and leggings are made of organic, fine weight knitted cotton, cosy fleecy sweatshirts and stylish denim jersey wear.  The Bonnie Mob clothing is ethically made, and the company believes in good quality clothing that is passed on to friends and family. I will certainly be keeping TLP’s Bonnie Mob garments for any future sibling!

There’s a 70s vibe to it all and it’s certainly for the cool kids in town!
