I have been going to the gym ever since my knee got bad back in my teens, so it’s become a part of normal routine. Having said this physiotherapy gets very boring, and I decided to finally take that step and use the gym I am a member off to the fullest.
So I have started my Yoga Journey.
I didn’t really know what to expect, some would say it’s more spiritual than a work out, then someone else would say it much tougher than I could imagine. Arriving to the studio I am wearing some gym shorts and a top, nothing overly fashionable sadly, I take a spot a little on the side as I am totally freaking out thinking I will fall over more than once for sure. The lovely instructor comes in and asks if anyone is new and if anyone has injuries, I do! I say with all smiles. With this over with it starts, what I noticed is that studying the names of the poses would have definitely helped as I had no clue which one is what and with that I had to stop and look and kind of lost my focus while doing so.
When it comes to Yoga fashion clothes, I think if you have a lot of flowy fabrics that you see in many styles of the yoga wear, it will be in your way for sure. Think tight and simple, but maybe fun and colourful. They had mats in the studio which I used, but they were very thin and didn’t feel super fresh so I’m definitely investing in on of my own. But looking at all the things you can invest in when it comes to Yoga I do think much of it is not needed, yoga is simple and not built on all this equipment.
Ok, so here I am trying my best to master the poses, and in the struggle, the instructor was very at helping with positioning feet here, hands there and still able to run the class. The breathing part still confuses me to this point, you breathe with the movements, I get that, but I was initially on one breath of in and out in one entire pose and movement, I don’t have those kind of lounges so I do hope I am allowed to take breaths in between as long as I breathe in on the correct movement and out on the other. Some of you might be laughing ever so slightly on your end when reading this, but imagine if someone’s never done this before and only do machines and weights in the gym, then it’s not so straightforward.
None the less, after one hour of this session, had past I was really feeling it and enjoying it, sweat running down my face and really not at all aware that this much time has past. I totally recommend trying Yoga because it is indeed a challenge and a fun one, so many poses that will do different things, strengthen and stretch. Aid flexibility and aches. And I have to say when it came to the end and we were all sitting in the Bound Angle Pose I had this overwhelming feeling, and so many emotions.
But most of all I left super happy, rejuvenated and with a mission to soon master the headstand pose.
