Sunday Brunch at Polpo Brighton

by Sara Darling

Sunday lunch might not be everyone’s time to be adventurous with your tastebuds, but I am not your typical lunch-lover! Classic Venetian dishes are firmly established on the menu at Brighton’s Polpo including crab and chilli linguine, anchovy, olive and caper pizzette, and chickpea, spinach and ricotta balls alongside classic meat and bistro faves.

Popping into Polpo in Brighton’s North Laine on a rain soaked Sunday was like stepping into a quintessential Mediterranean bistro. Candles, soft music, eccentric tables and benches which gave an air of clandestine romance. And certainly whet my appetite for some Venetian delicacies, and the menu did not have a roast potato or cabbage leaf in sight.

Fusing Mediterranean cuisine with some chef’s special tweaks, the menu is mouthwatering. Even as a pescitarian, I was spoilt for choice. Starting with a cocktail- which is a necessity for Sunday brunch- The Clover Club started me off nicely!Myself and my guest were advised on getting three sharing plates each, and without any bickering finalised our choices for sharing.

I knew I would love the crab linguine, and my partner the meatballs, so we hogged those to ourselves! But the sharing platters were perfect. On the right side of spicy, the portion sizes were generous, and the scallops, buffalo mozzarella pizzette, butternut squash risotto abd tiger prawns were divine. Had we not been so famished after the previous night’s Christmas do, we might not have finished them all!

For an atmosphere, taste and selection Polpo in Brighton is perfect for lunch, romantic dinner or group brunch. Kids love it too! A slice of Italian hospitality in the centre of town, you might just get hooked. Like me.
