The Hypnotic La Clique

by Emily Healey-Lynham

The multi-award-winning show La Clique show is back at the Spiegeltent in Leicester Square, London for Christmas. Described as circus, comedy, cabaret and music the production brings together an extremely talented international troupe of artists to showcase a hypnotic series of spectacular performances.

What you need to know about this hypnotic acrobatic display

Since its inception at The Edinburgh Fringe in 2004 this extraordinary cabaret show has continued to mix humour and burlesque with circus skills and showmanship. It’s a feast of a spectacle, a truly unique evening of fun, fantasy and jaw-dropping athleticism.

La Clique isn’t a bashful show by any stretch of the imagination with plenty of male and female flesh on display throughout. We begin with the exquisitely choreographed burlesque ofΒ Miss Jolie Papillon and her peacock feathers, closely followed by the hypnotic Katherine ArnoldΒ who takes to the air for our first, fantastic, aerial display of the evening.Β

Ashley StroudΒ is next, showing off a mighty fine set of pipes with a rendition of β€˜Diamonds are Forever’. Mikael Bres on a Chinese pole is simply extraordinary and he has fun with the audience throughout teasing us with catching feathers or making a sudden drop; breath-taking stuff.

Following him is Sam Goodburn who struggles to put his trousers on while riding a unicycle, audience participation comes to the fore here! After the unicycle act, we are introduced to the aerial performer, hypnotic Hugo Desmaroais who performs an amazing aerial disco routine. Our final performer is Tara Boom who makes popcorn in a very unique way with multiple hoops spinning!

We take a short interval and then are back for a second performance from each of the entertainers, with Boom’s foot juggling of umbrellas proving to be quite something and an amazing visual. Papillon’s second routine sees her climb into a very soapy bath, the contents of which she is only too happy to share with the front row!Β

For a finale, Arnold and Demaris team up for a sensational aerial duet, spinning around and around over the front rows.Β  Changes between the acts – some of them requiring quite elaborate technical setups – are done swiftly and never interrupt the frivolous atmosphere. Lavish lighting and music makes the whole show feel like a grand event.

La Clique is an edgy, sexy, joyful show full of giddy thrills and celebration: a must-see. Forget your circuses that are made to entertain the kids, you need to grab a group of your friends and go out here! Especially for a unique Christmas night out!
