6 Innovative Ideas for Mother’s Day

by Lorna Oakley
Mother's Day

With Mother’s Day approaching, we are bombarded by images and adverts promoting so many different things for your Mother or Mother figure, so here is a selection that is the perfect antidote to the cliched options!

Silk Scarf by Ashmolean Museum

The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s Museum of Art and Archaeology, founded in 1683. Their world-famous collections range from Egyptian mummies to contemporary art, telling human stories across cultures and across time.

I was sent one of their square silk scarves for Mother’s Day, this is a stunning habotai silk scarf inspired by jewellery pieces included in the Colour Revolution: Victorian Art, Fashion & Design exhibitionThis scarf design has been created exclusively for the Ashmolean.

The jewellery behind this collection dates from the late 19th century and was inspired by Japanese art, which had become popular in the Victorian era. These pieces were created by a number of jewellers including Parisian jeweller Alexis Falize, who was among the first to integrate vibrant flower and bird motifs inspired by Japanese prints in his precious enamels. How incredible is it that you can actually buy a piece of history like this? Here’s a link to purchase Habotai Scarf.

Glenn Rosa Hand Care by ARRAN Sense of Scotland

I was sent a set of Glenn Rosa Handcare from ARRAN Sense of Scotland. ARRAN Sense of Scotland began over three decades ago in 1989, all their products are made with mineral-rich Arran water and carefully finished by hand.

Arran Collections are inspired by the island, and vibrant summer sunsets are reflected in the warm fragrances of the Glen Rosa products. “Warm. Sweet. Delicate. This velvety fragrance combines the warmth of ripe, honeyed fig with the freshness of crushed green leaves

As well as the beautifully scented products, the products arrive perfectly wrapped for Mother’s Day, and you can purchase them here.

Pentire Drinks

Pentire was founded on a love for coastal living and I thought was the perfect idea for my mother in particular. Growing up in boats around the Welsh and Cornish coast, this struck a chord for me in particular. My mother’s a G&T drinker usually but I was drawn to Pentire as I knew she would be too.

Pentire Marg

Catching waves until dusk. Camping on cliff tops and foraging hedgerows for unexpected bounty. Sharing and experimenting with the flavours we found on the coast. We wanted to bottle that experience. And create a drink that harnesses the power, beauty and immense flavours of plants.

I was sent a bottle of their non-alcoholic take on the classic Margarita, Pentire’s coastal botanicals are blended with lime, agave, sea salt and a dash of Mexican chilli to create a fresh and zingy cocktail that’s entirely ready to drink. You can buy here.

Jurlique Hand Cream

I was sent one of their original and most loved products, the Rose hand cream. This luxurious and rich hand cream features their uplifting signature scent of Rose grown and extracted on their organic farm in South Australia. It’s enriched with botanical extracts to soothe and calm the skin and leave hands hydrated, softened and protected.

Jurlique has evolved and grown, blazing a trail in holistic and conscious beauty movements by creating sustainable, natural-based skincare products and beauty rituals that are in harmony with nature.

Rock & Rose Gin

Rock Rose Gin gets its wonderful flavour from a carefully selected and put-together creation of local and traditional botanicals. Each one is meticulously chosen for its flavour properties to create the perfect taste.

I was sent the loveliest bottle, hand-filled and wax-sealed, aesthetically they had won me already, but when reading the story further. Their aim with Dunnet Bay Distillery was to create jobs at home in Caithness.

Rock Rose Gin

We however never dreamed that one day we would employ fourteen people and win 2019 Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year at the Scottish Gin Awards, plus being awarded Great Taste Awards for Rock Rose Gin, Navy Strength Gin and Holy Grass Vodka and see our gin distributed and enjoyed all around the world

How lovely is that? You can buy their gorgeous gin here for Mother’s Day.
